VICTORY IN JESUS

Author: Eugene Monroe Bartlett, Sr.

"Last week, I wrote on a song that describes the Christian as a soldier and his journey a battlefield as he fights to win the souls of other men for Christ."

His own personal victory was won when he first experienced God's redemption through His Son. This "victory in Jesus" ensures the forgiveness of his sin and provides the theme for an extremely popular gospel hymn.

Eugene Monroe Bartlett, Sr, lived in the south and enjoyed a reputation as a fine music teacher. Based in Arkansas, he traveled the entire southern portion of the country holding singing schools for anyone interested. These and similar schools trained aspiring musicians in vocal technique, sight reading, and conducting and were influential in the development of church music as a whole for much of the remainder of the century.

When he was not instructing, Bartlett was an avid composer of hymns and gospel songs. Though almost all of his songs have sunk into oblivion among the Christian body today, "Victory In Jesus" remains one of the most popular and widely known songs of the church. The three verses and refrain enthusiastically tell of one's own personal salvation experience from beginning to end. Two years after he wrote this song, E.M. Bartlett experienced his own prophetic words: "And some sweet day I'll sing up there the song of victory," but his reassuring message lives on to encourage us through our days on Christ's battlefield.

I heard an old, old story,
how a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary,
to save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning,
of His precious blood's atoning,
Then I repented of my sins
and won the victory.

Oh victory in Jesus, my Savior, forever!
He sought me and bought me
with His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him,
and all my love is due Him-
He plunged me to victory
beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about His healing,
of His cleansing pow'r revealing,
How He made the lame
to walk again and caused the blind to see;
And then I cried, "Dear Jesus,
come and heal my broken spirit,"
And somehow Jesus came
and brought to me the victory.

Oh victory in Jesus, my Savior, forever!
He sought me and bought me
with His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him,
and all my love is due Him-
He plunged me to victory
beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory,
And I heard about the streets of gold
beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing
and the old redemption story-
And some sweet day I'll sing up there
the song of victory.

Oh victory in Jesus, my Savior, forever!
He sought me and bought me
with His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him,
and all my love is due Him-
He plunged me to victory
beneath the cleansing flood.
