The "WIN 98 StartUp Disk" contains 24 files, including FDISK.EXE,
COMMAND.COM, CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and the two hidden files
IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS, and the "Read Me" text file README.TXT. To
view Windows 98 help information contained in the README.TXT text
file, key in internal command "HELP". To scroll up/down, use the
up/down arrow keys and the page up/page down keys. To exit back
to the command prompt "A:\>", key in Alt+F, X (or Alt+F, and use
the down arrow key to scroll down to Exit, and press the Enter key).
      o. To view the contents of "CONFIG.SYS", key in "TYPE CONFIG.SYS".
      p. To view the contents of "AUTOEXEC.BAT", key in "TYPE AUTOEXEC.BAT".
      q. To view contents of "README.TXT" text file, one screenfull at a time,

press the Space bar. For one more line, press the Enter key. To
end the display, press any other key or press Ctrl+C.
         Notes:
         (1) The "pipe" (|) character is above reverse slash on the keyboard.
         (2) Reverse slash characters are used in directory\file names.
         (3) Forward slashes are used to supply parameters to a command,
such as "DIR /A-D /OS /P" for files by size and by screenfull.
         (4) The "old" DOS file name format consists of the 8.3 format, where
the file name contains 1 to 8 characters, and the file extension
contains from 0 to 3 characters. So, we create file names such
as "README.TXT" for a text file, and "AUTOEXEC.BAT" for a batch
control file, and "COMMAND.COM" and "FDISK.EXE" for executable
             program files.
         (5) To specify "all file names" and "all file extensions" we can use
the "wildcard format" which is *.* -- so to copy all files from
             directory C:\DIR1 to C:\DIR2 we enter "COPY C:\DIR1\*.* C:\DIR2".
But note that "COPY C:\DIR1 C:\DIR2" is equivalent, in this case.
      r. To view summary information about the floppy disk, key in "CHKDSK A:".
      s. To view the version information for Windows 98 SE, key in "VER".
You will see displayed "Windows 98 [Version 4.10.2222]".
      t. To view the volume label of the floppy disk in A:, key in "VOL A:".
      u. To view the real-time clock current date value, key in "DATE".
      v. To view the real-time clock current time value, key in "TIME".
   7. Prepare hard drive C: (aka HD #0) partition information.
      a. From the Windows 98 DOS command prompt "A:\>" key in the command
"FDISK.EXE" (or just "FDISK"), and press the Enter key.
(the formal complete full-path command is "A:\FDISK.EXE")
      b. If your hard drive is larger than 512MB (almost all are nowadays),
then choose "Enable large hard disk support [Y]" and press Enter.
      c. You will now see the five-choice menu for the FDISK utility program:

              1. Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive
              2. Set active partition
              3. Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive
              4. Display partition information
              5. Change current fixed disk drive

(Press the Escape key to exit from a menu choice
and to return back to this five-choice menu)

Your hard drive may contain these four types of partitions:
         (1) One or more primary DOS partitions
         (2) Zero or more extended DOS partitions
         (3) Zero or more logical "drives" contained within (2)
(Logical drives will have been assigned additional drive letters)
         (4) Zero or more Non-DOS partitions (such as for the Linux op sys)

You will use the FDISK Hard Drive utility program to:
         (a) Remove all of these partitions -- in "upside down" order (i.e.,
Non-DOS, logical drives, extended partitions, primary partitions).
         (b) Then create a single primary DOS partition, allocate all hard
drive space to this new partition, and set it "Active".
         (c) Then reboot the PC from "Win 98 StartUp Disk" in floppy drive A:.

FDISK Hard Drive utility program procedures:
aa. Select 4. Display partition information for C: (aka HD #0)
bb. Write down this hard drive partition information.
cc. Press the Escape key to continue.

ff. Select 3. to Delete extended DOS partitions (if present).
gg. Select 3. to Delete primary DOS partition(s).
Note: If a partition contains an internal label, then you
must key in the label info exactly as it appears.
hh. Select 4. Display partition information -- to confirm that
all hard drive partitions have now been deleted.
ii. Select 1. to Create a new primary DOS partition. Allocate
all hard drive space to this new partition.
jj. Select 2. to Set this primary DOS partition as "Active".
kk. Then proceed to step 8. below.
Note: Reboot the PC in order for this new hard drive partition
structure to take effect. This is done in step 9. below.

   8. Insert the "Windows 98 SE - Full version" CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Note: The CD-ROM drive will usually have the drive letter D: or E:.
   9. Reboot the PC from the "Win 98 StartUp Disk" in floppy drive A:.
Note: To reboot the PC, press the keyboard keys Ctrl+Alt+Del.
  10. When you see the "Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu" on the screen

      d. To view hard drive summary information, from command prompt "A:\>"
key in the command A:\> "CHKDSK C:".
  13. Create a directory in the root directory of HD C: called "CABS".
From the command prompt "A:\>" key in the command "MKDIR C:\CABS".
(an alternate form of the command is "MD C:\CABS")
  14. Copy Windows 98 SE "cabinet" files from the "CABS" directory in the
root directory of "Windows 98 SE" CD to the "CABS" directory in the
root directory of hard drive C:.
From the command prompt "A:\>" key in A:\> "COPY E:\CABS C:\CABS"
where "E:" is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
(an alternate form of the command is "COPY E:\CABS\*.* C:\CABS")
  15. After all "cabinet" files have been copied, you should see this line
displayed on the screen: "101 files copied".

  17. Remove the "Windows 98 SE" CD from the CD-ROM drive. All Windows 98 SE
installation information is now contained in the "CABS" directory of
hard drive C: (i.e., in the hard drive directory "C:\CABS").

C. Install "Windows 98 Second Edition" operating system on a PC (use PC #2)
   1. Reboot the PC #2 from the "Win 98 StartUp Disk" in floppy drive A:.
Note: To reboot the PC, press the keyboard keys Ctrl+Alt+Del.
   2. When you see the "Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu" on the screen
      a. Choose option 2. "Start computer without CD-ROM support".

This means that the current disk drive is hard drive "C:", and
the current directory position is set at directory "C:\CABS".
      c. Optional: To view the names of all executable program files in
"C:\CABS", key in each of these two wildcard directory commands:

C:\CABS> "DIR *.EXE" (the formal complete command: DIR C:\CABS\*.EXE)
Notice that the "Windows 98 SE" Setup program file name "SETUP.EXE"
is present in the list of executable program file names.
      d. Run the "Windows 98 SE" Setup program "SETUP.EXE".
From command prompt "C:\CABS>", key in "SETUP.EXE" (or just "SETUP")
